In Torremaggiore, the excellence of oil triumphs: success for the “L'Oro della Puglia e di Federico II” 2025 Award

The 2025 edition of the “L'Oro della Puglia e di Federico II” Award has ended , which animated Torremaggiore from 5 to 7 June, confirming the central role of high-quality extra virgin olive oil. The event, organized by the Municipality of Torremaggiore and OLEA – National Association of Olive Oil Tasters, took place in collaboration with the Peranzana Alta Daunia Consortium , the La Peranzana Association , the ISISS “Fiani-Leccisotti” , the IC “Via Sacco e Vanzetti” and the Ex Circolo Didattico “E. Ricci”, with the patronage of the Gal Daunia Rurale 2020 and the organizational support of One Eventi . The initiative attracted great interest and participation from producers, extra virgin olive oil enthusiasts, experts in the sector and students from the city schools .
The heart of the event was the award ceremony of the 17th Regional Award “L'Oro della Puglia” and the 6th Regional Award “L'Oro di Federico II” , held on Saturday 7 June at the Auditorium of the IC “Via Sacco e Vanzetti”. Giorgio Sorcinelli , Director of OLEA and the competitions, led the presentation of the results and the assignment of the awards, supported by Renzo Ceccacci , President of the Olea Association. «There were 60 oils in the competition, we have remained at the same level as previous years with some new entries. We are very satisfied with the work that the producers have done and the quality of the oils that they have presented», underlined Sorcinelli.
The mayor of Torremaggiore Emilio Di Pumpo highlighted how the territory has been able to seize the opportunities for growth and innovation : "Torremaggiore has made a great leap forward in the last twenty years, enhancing its potential thanks to the Consorzio della Peranzana, the associations and the olive growers who have long understood that it was no longer enough to just produce, but it was necessary to shorten the supply chain, transforming the product. In recent years we have established a good collaboration with our friends at Olea, with the Premio L'Oro di Federico II, and we have also started to do important work with schools".
Senator Gisella Naturale recalled Puglia's primacy in the production of extra virgin olive oil with protected designation of origin, while underlining the need for greater protection and more precise traceability . "We must promote the green gold and make it an ambassador for this wonderful territory. To do so, it is necessary to reach the highest level of quality of extra virgin olive oil, in order to differentiate ourselves from what is becoming a globalization of the sector. Traceability must be more precise to guarantee the provenance of the oil", remarked Naturale who, on 23 June, will promote in the Senate a bill on the olive sector that provides for a culture of oil on a par with that of wine, also in the context of consumer education and training.
During the event, ample space was also dedicated to training and awareness-raising among the youngest. The students of ISISS “Fiani-Leccisotti”, IC “Via Sacco e Vanzetti” and Ex Circolo Didattico “E. Ricci” participated in the workshop “EXTRAVERGINE? Nice to meet you”, a short introductory course to tasting extra virgin olive oil, also promoted with conviction by the school principal Pina Ametta , who recalled the moral duty to spread knowledge of oil among young people.
There were also moments of technical-scientific study, such as the conference “ Olive growing in Alta Daunia: Peranzana, a resource for the territory ”, introduced by Leonardo De Vita of the Peranzana Alta Daunia Consortium. Salvatore Germinara of the University of Foggia – DAFNE Department emphasized sustainable defense strategies to defend the olive tree from various parasites, in particular the olive fly and the olive moth, species that in our environments cause significant damage, both quantitatively and qualitatively. «In this context, made difficult also by climate change and the reduction in the number of agrochemicals that were allowed until a few years ago, the University of Foggia is developing an intense research activity to find solutions that are sustainable, that is, with low environmental impact and, above all, with low impact on the health of consumers and operators», said Germinara.
Luigi Catalano (Agrimeca Grape and Fruit Consulting) stressed the importance of innovation and mechanization in olive growing : “We need to produce more and this is possible by increasing the plants and restructuring the existing ones to favor mechanization. We must not be afraid to bring innovation to the fields because only in this way will it be possible to reduce production and management costs”.
The event concluded on Saturday evening at the Castello Ducale in Torremaggiore with the gastronomic event “ L'Oro nel Piatto ”, during which it was possible to taste different types of extra virgin olive oil and typical local dishes paired with fine wines. The evening was enlivened, sealing an edition rich in participation, culture and conviviality, by the hilarious cabaret show of Arteteca from Made in Sud and, finally, the music of the Big Slave Band.
